PGY 4440C PHOTO COMPUTER IMAGING - Course Objectives

PHOTO/COMPUTER IMAGING is for the student that is competent in basic photography and is interested in the computer as a photographic tool. In addition to working with the conventional Black & White film and darkroom printmaking process, we will be investigating some of the potentials of digital imaging. The course objective is the production of a body of work and the presentation of that body of work in several formats: darkroom prints, digital prints, and photo web gallery.

The class is a continuation of the photographic experiences introduced in Photo 1. In working to refine these skills the instruction will stress technical proficiency and production as well as the thematic aspects of picture taking. Computer photo programs will be introduced that relate to the student’s familiarity with photography basics (introduced in Photo 1), in addition to photo web gallery development: Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Illustrator, Freehand, Word, etc.

Required photographic and web portfolios:

Written Outline & Artistic Statement. Write a one-page outline for approval of your chosen photographic theme. After your outline is approved, develop a one page artistic statement to be approved that is to be your shooting script. Your project for the term should be tightly themed so that all images make a cohesive and complete body of work between wet prints, digital prints and, photo web gallery. Your progress in developing images for the theme is critiqued and edited weekly. Both outline and statement must be approved before moving forward.

Print Portfolio. Using the approved theme begin developing your artistic vision. Also, plan to participate in the weekly revisions that are geared for the project presentation of a minimum of ten (10) black & white prints in minimum size of 5x7 inches, mounted, matted, or boxed or book format. Whatever your chosen format for presentation, all images are to be professionally presented for critique.

Digital Portfolio. Your print portfolio (above) will be scanned for your final digital print portfolio, presentation and critique. Class sessions will deal with scanning, adjusting, and digital printing of the black & white photos that are to be your final portfolio critique with a minimum of ten (10) digital images are required.

Web Gallery. Your web gallery will be made up of a selection of your best images that have been scanned and adjusted for presentation on the Internet. Additional images should be included, at your discretion, to make a minimum fifteen (15) images for your web photo gallery.

Assignments are presented in weekly group critiques that rely on the traditional method of information exchange. The aim being that the class offers feedback of the work in progress as an aid to successfully completing the project. Regularly assigned readings, followed by class discussions, are also be part of the overall student development process.

Grading will be based on these requirements and instructor’s evaluation of assigned projects:

  • Class attendance
  • Participation in class critiques, and discussions.
  • Meeting assigned project deadlines
  • Final Portfolio Presentations: Silver Prints, Digital Prints, & Web Photo Gallery
  • Written Final exam
