Intersections – The Deering Estate

The Deering Estate presents the 2016 Festival of the Arts “Intersections” Exhibition. Within the unique invitational format of this year’s event, artists in the South Florida Community and beyond create site-specific works and performances. Events include a special performance by National Water Dance, an indoor and outdoor exhibit, a Curator’s and Artists’ Tour, a Literary Lounge, and interactive activities for all ages.

The “Intersections” Exhibit will be on display from April 4 – May 20, 2016.

In 1880 Florida was largely a frameless, borderless space lacking a clearly defined distinction between the human and nature. Even though it was a deeply contested space we cannot stand back and look at where we are today and deny our culture’s legacy is one of fixation on attempted control of resources for personal financial gain and its resulting unintended consequences. Unfortunate consequences, one would say.

The installation, “meski’k musikisk ejinkwa’sit; meski’k kloqoejk ejinkwa’sit,” and its audio component, “Everglades_earth_2,” is a retrospective look at the celestial sky over south Florida in August, 1880, interpreted through a sculptural installation accompanied by specifically composed music and two poems. The body of work is of reflection and contemplation; a layer of the hidden smudge of ancient skin against the walls of your Eden’s garden.
